Intellectual Geekery: Date That Globe - Answered.

The globe depicted below dates back to somewhere between 1958 and 1960.

Let's explain the latter year first: Take a look at French West Africa and Belgian Congo. These two areas became independent states in 1960.

The Wege and Discordianstooge came the closest to the former date. (Good guesses, guys.) I initially thought that Ghana, in western Africa, put this globe somewhere between 1954 (when Ghana gained its independence from Britain) and 1960.

Then I noticed the Federated States of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in the bottom center. That was Britain's colonial-era attempt in 1957 to unite the three nations that would eventually become Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. Here I had a three-year window of when this globe was made.

That window narrowed further when I saw Egypt, in the upper right of the picture, listed with the name "United Arab Republic." The UAR was an attempt to establish a pan-Arab state that did not come to fruition. Egypt and Syria founded the UAR in 1958.

So, there you have it.

These old globes are neat... especially for us history-teaching-types.

If anyone can narrow this further, please have at it and throw in your two cents.

Mo...it's your globe, and your "contest" so you can say what you want...but I disagree with your sources.

Here is some of mine:

March 6, 1957: Ghana is the first of the colonies in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence. Africa and the rest of the world follows the creation of the new state with high anticipations.

Gold Coast & European Exploration: Before March 1957 Ghana was called the Gold Coast.

It was the first black African country to obtain independence from colonial rule. Upon achieving independence from the United Kingdom in 1957, the name Ghana was chosen for the new nation as a reference to its ancient roots in the Empire of Ghana.

Before the Gold Coast became the self-governing dominion of Ghana on March 6th, 1957,

And now French West Aferica

The federation ceased to exist after the September 1958 referendum on the future French Community, in which the constituent territories voted to became autonomous republics except for Guinea, which voted overwhelmingly for independence.

In 1958 the constituent territories became autonomous republics in the French Community, except for Guinea, which became independent. The federation was dissolved in 1959.

Sharky, you are correct...

I have to go back and see where I found that 1954 date. I probably confused independence with some path toward independence Britain had "prepared" Ghana for -- possibly autonomy or some other limited self-governance.
