They got it tough down here in Florida.

To my fellow Minnesotans: Get a tight hold on your battery-heated thermal socks and Sorel boots before you check this out.

South Floridians advised to protect pets, plants as weekend temperatures plummet (Miami Herald):

Even South Florida can get pretty chilly sometimes.

Want proof? Stick around for the weekend.

Residents may wake up Saturday and Sunday to the coldest temperatures felt in South Florida so far this winter, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service issued a ”special weather statement” warning of near-freezing temperatures caused by a cold front moving today into Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

The possibility of temperatures dipping to the low 40s to mid 30s means owners of plants and pets may want to bring them inside tonight and Saturday night.

Also: Dress the kids in layers before letting them play outside, and consider wearing a sweat shirt for this weekend’s jogs.

”Oh my God, I think I might die if it gets that cold,” said Susan Wilson, office manager at American Pool Service in Plantation.

A warning for “near-freezing temperatures?” “Consider wearing a sweat shirt?” Quick! Close the schools, rush the grocery stores for supplies, and declare the state a disaster area.

Heh. If Wilson thinks the mid-30s will bring her close to death, she should come up for a visit in The Land of Thirty Below.

Weather. It’s all relative, eh?

Like this never happened before

Oh, look. The local right wing again unleashes one more yawn-inducing self-important bombastic tirade that the MSM is showing its liberal bias because after quoting only from conservative local blogs, they were shamed into a timid capitulation that liberal blogs exist.

Learned Foot, Oppression is thy middle name.

Update: The Learned one missed the point (imagine that), resorts to swearing and name calling (ditto) and thinks I called him opressive. Well, he is, the poor dear, but that’s not how I meant it. I meant to utilize my all-too-liberal sense of empathy to convey that the Yowling crowd feels his pain in being shut out and his only voice symbolically silenced merely by the Strib’s blog columnist acknowledging that liberal blogs exist.

Skin that thin’s gotta burn easily.

Sunday school flashback?

I never went to a typical Sunday school, mind you. Instead, I went to a Catholic version of it, only it was Monday through Friday. One nice thing of it was that I did have a religion teacher who was on top of this symbolic interpretation thing almost two decades ago. It’s good to see the Scots taking note of it today.

Heroes & villains: Roman Catholic Church and Cllr Maclean (UK – Scotsman):

NB: we know that there are far more worthy heroes than those listed here – doctors, nurses, aid workers, etc. Similarly, murderers, rapists and dictators are indisputably far greater villains. This column does not deal with them. It is designed to honour those who have caused surprise by their actions.

Heroes: Roman Catholic Church — For rather a long time the Roman Catholic Church was, shall we say, a little dogmatic. But now they’re going all wishy-washy and Church of England on us.

The bishops of England, Wales and Scotland have published a pamphlet – “The Gift of Scripture”, it’s called – which explains that some bits of the Bible might not necessarily be the infallible word of an omnipotent God after all. Some bits of it are, in fact, not literally true.

Not the bits about that nice Mr O’Nazareth, you understand, they’re still true. But all that stuff in the Garden of Eden with the magic fruit and talking snake? Not true, apparently – just a bit of fun. Where that leaves the doctrine of original sin isn’t explained in the press release, though I imagine the Vatican’s got that one covered.

But in reality the Roman Catholic Church – its unseemly obsession with sex notwithstanding – has been a fairly cuddly institution for quite a while now. If only someone could mollify the real fundamentalist loonies – those intelligently-designed, enraptured “Christians” whose all-loving God tells them to make war on people half way round the world – I’d be an awful lot happier.

Good golly… A more peaceful world through religious teachings? Add to that a more politically, socially, and culturally just world and I might be compelled to give a hearty “amen” to that.

Peace be with us all, and the sooner the better.
